Smalti
It was by the Byzantines in the 5th century who first elevated the possibilities of art through mosaics and smalti was their medium. From Florence and Venice to Sicily and Istanbul, some of the finest surviving examples of mosaic art were created using smalti tiles. These tiny tiles, made from thick sheets of mineral-colored glass that are broken into little pieces, are used to create mosaics on a variety of surfaces.
